I am thrilled that moly_x will be exhibiting at Minnesota Center of Book Arts (MCBA), between mid-January through March 2011. It's coming up! This is a great venue, and this exhibit could mean some wonderful opportunities for other exhibitions around the country, and possible grants. This is a very receptive community.

I would like a few of the great portrait books from this group. These books do not have to be completed. If you have a book right now would you consider sending it to me next. It will be out of circulation through March, but it will get some wonderful attention. I will guarantee it's safe return, or delivery to the next artist on the list.

MCBA does a great job of documenting their shows, so you will have a nice record. Whoever is in the book may add another credit to her/his resumé. We will continue to look for other similar venues for moly_x exhibitions. There are many book art institutions like this around the country, and there are many university book arts, and illustration programs.

I have dreamed of this exhibit since we started this little project. I would like to get 2 or 3 portrait books from this group.

Dear all,
Hope you're fine.
I'd like to say that I'm always in the group and I have to reconfirm it again because 2 of your mollies on the way to me (don't know which ones) were returned to you be the post. That happens 'cause during April and May I was out of Moscow and my husband and father tried to receive the mollies but vainly - to get a personal sending you should show ID of the consignee, and my ID was with me...
So I kindly ask the person who has the returned molly to send it to me again! I will be at home at least during the summer and I will get it for sure!
Really sorry for that....

This is finally winging it's way over to Natalia in Moscow - hope you like it Tyler. My partner says I've made you look like Paul Newman, I hope you feel it resembles more you than him! :o)

Seeing as our ranks have shrunk a little I used an extra page, hence why I'm poking rather tacked-on-like through the bushes!

On a side issue - thanks to everyone for the support to keep the group going, I've gone ahead and updated the list over on the RHS with all those who have written in to say they are still are interested in continuing. Anyone who is opposed to the changes I've made (the removed names), please let me know via Flickrmail as I'm not out to upset or exclude anyone. Same goes with any suggestions or requests.

2010 Stocktake

Hey everyone, as the comments on the last thread were getting a bit long I thought a new one might be good. A fresh start for a new year!

The good news is that we've tracked down almost everyone's books - they are with people who are either still willing to participate, or who are intending to pass them along very soon. Unfortunately we have also lost a couple of members - as you all know from his post - Richie, but also MaryAnne - things have become too hectic for her to continue, but she will be forwarding Lizzy's and Paul's books to Carolyn within the next week or so. So keep an eye on your postbox Carolyn!

So here's where the books are:

Josh has: Vi's, Ted's, and Richie's
Lizzy has: Josh's
MaryAnne has: Lizzy's and Paul's
Tyler has: Carolyn's and Mary's
Serena has: Tyler's
Natalia has: Serena's

Unfortunately we're still yet to hear anything from Lizzy, Natalia, or Janelle, so I don't know if they're still in or out. I'll keep trying via Flickrmail, but we should put this to a vote - if we don't hear from them, do we make an executive decision to not forward anymore books to them until we do? As it stands Josh and I have potentially lost our books until Lizzy and Natalia resurface.

Secondly - do we need a couple of administrators to keep this on track? I'm happy to put my hand up, but is anyone else interested?

I'm afraid that I've finally decided to drop out of the group. After months of not working on any of the portraits, I decided to finally admit to myself and to everyone else that I'm never going to finish them. Had I not been so busy the past semester, perhaps things would be different. Hopefully everyone else is still busy working on their books and will continue to post on here so that I can check in on your progress every now and again. I've passed on the books that I had in my possession to LARSPOWDERDRY (Josh), and I believe he plans on keeping the train running.

Have a good holiday season and don't let the stress of shopping drive you to madness.

I remember Carolyn writing in a post that she was considered too serious and she encouraged us to remedy that in our drawings. So nothing says "I've lightened up" like balancing a bottle of wine on your head. I used a photo she posted of herself in front of a lake and I was putting the last touches in when I realized I was supposed to include my self-portrait. Woops. So a bit of a lame version here of a silhouetted fly fisherman....which is what I'd be doing if I were at the lake (and asking Carolyn for a glass from the bottle on top of her head). This goes to Serena in Australia with Mary's journal which is soon to follow (it has taken me a little longer).

I've finished my contribution to Serena's moly. I really hope I will work on the next moly faster... and I hope that Serena will be not too disappointed by my drawing, which was inspired by one very known painting :)

Did anyone else notice the echo of that "hello" falling into empty space? Our group has gone eerily silent lately. What is everyone working on? Let's see some pics. I'm moly-less at the moment and hoping to find a package in the mail soon.

I met our generous "host" Marty Harris last night. Yes Virginia, he is a real live person and lives just a stone's throw from yours truly. Talking with him about the moly-x projects (he has coordinated almost 75 at this point--way to go, Marty!) got me motivated to get our group moving again. He also suggested that its not a bad idea to offer up the escape option if anyone is feeling overwhelmed or under-interested at this point. He said most groups will have one or two people who need to drop out for one reason or another and its no big deal--just be sure to get the molies to the next person in line.

My college-age sons have returned to school leaving me with no one to nag! Its tough going cold turkey like that, so I'm putting my mom-skills to work on all of you. Anyone working on their books? I remember something about doing one per month--are we still aiming for that? Let's keep it going......

I got my Moleskine a while ago, and have been procrastinating for some time now with my self-portrait. As you can see, I've joined my sign-in page with my portrait...I made the mistake of not separating the four pages into two separate .jpegs so you'll have to click on the image for a better/more detailed shot. I'm looking forward to see what everyone else puts in my book. I'll be sending this to Josh shortly.

Now I must begin working on Ted's book.

I wanted to ask a clarifying question, do we draw a portrait of the person who the Moleskine belongs to in their Moleskine? I'm assuming this is the case, but I just wanted to make sure.

I am not used to being the first one done on any assignment, EVER! But I've got a couple trips coming up and wanted to get this done.(Any comments on the timeline? Are we still aiming for one book per month?)

So, here is my first portrait in someone else's book. This is my painting/collage of Carolyn. I used collage, watercolor and caran d'ache. I had alot of fun and hope you can see at least some resemblence, Carolyn!

I already sent this along but I finally got a chance to post it. I got my journal late so I had to do this all in one night but the more I work on things the worse they seem to get so I'll try not to overwork any of the portraits of all of you. This one was just ink with a brush. It's the first time I ever used that medium so I think I'll stick with it a while and see if I can perfect it a bit. Hope you all enjoy it.

I haven't figured the magic formula for contrast accurate b/w sketch scanning so this is a really dark photo instead! Hubby says that this drawing does resemble the source photo I chose, but that unfortunately the photo looks nothing like me - harrumpf... guess you can't win them all.

I had to 'show and tell' my sign in pages too - these took me longer than I thought which is why I'm running a smidge late.

I am looking very serious in this drawing, because I tend to be a serious person in general. In fact, sometimes I have to think about jokes for a bit before I find them funny. It's hard to admit, but it's true. Therefore, everybody feel free to draw/paint me in the most outrageous manner you can imagine. It will be good for me! I drew this in watersoluble colored pencils, which is not something I've ever used on moleskine paper before. With this project, I want to try some different things than I usually do.

Here is my self-portrait ready to head off to Tyler in South Africa. ( Its like the old joke...."my portrait has been more places than I have" ! ) I used collage, caran d'ache crayons and gouache.

I still have one unanswered question about logistics. Do we send the book back to the owner after each portrait, or do I continue to send each one on to Tyler? Thanks for the help on this.

Well, it's a start. This goes to Serena in Australia this week. This was based on a picture of me in the Sua Pan in Botswana. It's an incredible place and I could easily keep my drawing the same size but expand the pan and sky into a 10-foot painting and that would give you just a small idea of the scale out there. I was very happy, overheated and nearly sun-blind so it's a funny picture, but the fella in this drawing looks way too tormented. There were no clouds that day but my fingerprints + the sketch paper's love/hate relationship with watercolor decided to create clouds. It's graphite, ink, gouache, watercolor.

The sign-in page is just 15 squares (in case we get 15 people) that I hope you'll fill with anything you want. I almost glued in a bougainvillea bloom b/c of its astonishing red color (and b/c it's Bloomsday) but I doubted if the color would last so I continued the fingerprint theme with a blob/thumbprint. It confirmed what I already knew: I have no career in law enforcement. I'm okay with that. I put an interesting local advertisement in the pocket.

I'm looking forward to this exchange of ideas and inspiration (and the drawing practice) with you all.

Source Photos & Housekeeping

As this group seems to be cranking up now I thought it might be worthwhile mentioning about everyone putting up some source photos in Flickr so we know what everyone looks like.

Is that the way these things are usually done? I'm guessing a variety of headshots or clear photos labelled so we know who you are would be most helpful. Are there any other methods/suggestions for this?

The other little bits are the mailing schedules and passing our addresses onto our 'next in line' recipients. Tyler's about to send his moly to me in the next couple of weeks - is this a reasonable timeframe for everyone to send out their molys - ie. by end of June? Then do we try to keep to a one month turnaround? All in favour....

What do you say that we get this party started? There are currently nine of you. You certainly can start this exchange with nine artists. I recommend that some of you invite artists friends, Flickr friends, to join the group. We are looking for 15 artists.

Each of you will start with a Japanese fold Moleskine pocket sketchbook. Many artists reserve the front cover pages for artist sign in. Draw a self portrait in your own book, then send it to the next person on the list. Ask that person for her/his mailing address.

Please, if you are not committed, do not start. This is a very fun project the rewards in friendship and fabulous art are great. You will be rewarded.
